New Journeys Awaiting

It is finally safe to say that I am done with my first semester of college. I did not expect it to go by this fast. I honestly learned some valuable lesson and feel like I have a lot to look forward to in the near future. With that being said I will be relaxing and reflecting on more ways to improve myself as a student in 2014. I know there will be plenty of challenges in life but mentally I will be ready to endure them and come out on top. I fought hard to close out my semester on a good note and I definitely won't let myself start off on another bad one. This break is well deserved, so when it is time to finally go back I will be back with a new level of dedication to all of my crafts.

Vocabulary Finale

One word that is extremely powerful and crucial in society is Freedom. To have freedom- is the the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. Less then 200 years ago, there were people who were standing up for the rights of their future ancestors. Slavery was a very powerful source of income back in the days when not everyone in America had freedom. Slavery- is the keeping of slaves as a practice or institution. Black leaders like Martin Luther King made motivational speeches all over the South and acted through civil disobedience. Civil Disobedience- is the refusal to abide by all government demands with nonviolent tactics as boycotting, picketing, and nonpayment of taxes.

Moving On Up

A wise man by the name of John Dewey once said "you do not learn from experience, you learn from reflecting on your experiences." That is very accurate because when you reflect and analyze your experiences you learn way more then you do at the moment or during a situation. Life is a nonstop cycle in which  we are able to learn and experience things everyday. Sometimes things are not clear to us at first but when we sit back and reflect there are things we start to see that can be fixed and worked on for better results in the future.

There was a lot I learned from being a college student this semester. It was a few early steps that I had to hurdle by adjusting to the workload and putting the time and effort into all of my assignments. Every class has their own syllabus which is vital in order to stay on top of your assignments at all times. At first I overlooked my syllabus in some classes and fell behind early which really put me in a bad position. However, once I got it together and changed my mindset there was a different approach I took to my college studies as a whole. This is the last type of school before we go out into the real world and in order to make it in life you must be able to fit tough criteria regulations for good jobs in modern day society. College is more then just school, but also a little bit of training for how we will start off our career in the near future. People should look at it as practice for when they get a real job because that's how important it is, you must have a certain drive to want to work hard and be successful unless you will just  be waiting your time and money.

In the journey of life, we all have our ups and downs along the way. Everybody has had some hard times in their life but it is how you respond to that adversity that makes you who you are. My biggest challenge this semester would definitely have to be handling and managing my free time to the best of my ability. It was the different setting and atmosphere that I was not used to at first that caused me to lose my focus in the early parts of the semester. I wasn't giving my studies enough effort and review to even expect the results I wanted. When I realized that my first ever GPA was in jeopardy of looking horrific I had no choice but to rearrange my priorities then give them the attention they required. I responded well by turning off my phone and zoning out from everyone when I needed to do my work. Also I gave myself enough time to do assignments and not cram everything at the last minute like I was doing before. During the  last half of the semester most of my time and effort without a doubt was dedicated to improving my grades in each one of my classes as much as possible before the end of the semester. Although I didn't meet a lot of my goals I set the bar for how to finish a semester and to move forward with. There is definitely a lot to improve on but now that I know what to expect I am looking forward to taking all the challenges next semester has to offer and working hard to bring my GPA up to a 3.0.

As you can see, this semester was definitely a learning experience for me. Now reflecting back on it, there were a lot of things that I could've did differently knowing what I know now. I can only improve on the future and let the past stay where it's at because this life waits for nobody. I may have my work cut out for me but I am determined to be successful and nothing worth having comes easy.

Adjusting To The Changes

With the winter season here, it can get really cold and easy to get sick out here in Connecticut. Since my house is a couple hours away, I had to make sure I brought enough stuff to keep me warm for the winter season so I don't have to keep traveling to get things I need. When I came back from thanksgiving break, I started bringing up some heavy winter gear from my house since I didn't previously bring a lot of warm clothes up to my dorm. I haven't been used to moving my clothes all around and keeping them in different locations since I lived in the same place since I was 5 but things are different now. I need to make sure I take good care of my body no matter if I'm at home or on campus. As time keeps passing us by, we will be fully grown and on our own before we know it. I have to take more responsibility in my health and priorities as that is an essential part of maturity.

Voluntary Vocabulary

One new word that isn't really used that much autonomy. An Autonomy- is the state or condition of having freedom. Many people in the world still don't have the privilege of living in an autonomy. There are still countries on the other side of the world that are dictatorships.

Another word that we will be introduced to this week is advocate. An Advocate- is a person who speaks for or writes in defense of a person. When people go to court they pay good money for an advocate or lawyer that will back them up in court and help support your story to the judge.

The last word for the week that we will be hearing about is Utopia. Utopia- is an ideal place or state. When people are in a Utopia that generally means they are in their own little world or zoned out from everybody else.

Propper Prepration

With the last week of classes coming up, it is important that I go out with a bang! I have certainly taken strides forward in all of my classes and want to make sure I continue that by acing all of my final assignments. There is a way that I can achieve my goals but I must study and put the necessary amount of preparation I need in order to get a great grade in all of my classes. There is nothing else I am worried more about then finishing off the semester strong.

To make sure that I am going to good on all of my finals, I have made the decision to stay in all weekend and work on my video and take that other extra time to study for my final exams. It is way more important that I get a good grade on a something that counts for a portion of my grade in each class.  By making flash cards and reviewing all of the notes that I have taken so far this year in all of my classes will help me a lot. Some people do not have the dedication to be able to buckle down and handle priorities but when you are dedicated, you do everything in your power to stay true to your goals. It is not an easy task to but your all into studying and finalizing projects after 15 weeks of intense work and class but it pays off in the long run.

I have learned a lot by being in college. When people used to tell me that college is a lot of work I never knew the truth behind but now I see how intense I gets. However I do not believe the load of work is nothing that us student's cant handle it is up to our mindset. In order to be successful you have to be mentally strong, which means you must have a tough minded attitude. The weak minded don't go anywhere in life because they can't handle the hard work it takes to be and stay on the top. I can ensure my success because I am an individual with certain morals and sets of goals that I am trying to live up to. If I didn't want to make anything of my life I wouldn't have came to college but since I'm here I need to take full advantage and pave the way for future generations to follow mine.

By this time of semester nobody feels like doing the work. It is not a matter of if you feel like doing it however, the wise ones know how important it is to get ready for finals since they count for so much of your grade. There aren't many tests in college so you know the ones we do get count for a lot. Since we will be going on another break shortly after finals, you could never go wrong by going all out in preparation for finals which will put yourself into the best possible position moving forward into next semester.

Editorial Feedback

Throughout the pass week in class we have been reviewing fellow students' draft videos that they are working on before we finish off the semester. I have noticed a lot of growth in us as a class and individually by analyzing all of the videos. There were some great creative ideas that many of my peers had that really was impressive. In  the beginning of the year, I wouldn't have imagined learning and taking on the bulk of challenging work we did during the past couple of weeks and with the way our drafts are looking make it seem like the grittiness has began to pay off.

One thing in particular from watching the drafts of the videos in class is that as long as we put forth good effort and use our creative thinking in our video, the rest will take care of itself. There is a process that takes place in all aspects of life in order to reach a high amount of success. It is about how you prepare and execute your plans that you have in order to follow things out and be happy with yourself in the end. I feel like it was good to start my draft during the break and put a video together which got some good critiquing which I can build on from there. Not only was it convenient to get all of the class' help by peer editing but even just by comparing and contrasting the different ideas that we came up with for our videos could also be beneficial as we finish up our videos.

By having the opportunity to watch all of the drafts of the videos was a chance to make sure we all get good grades on the final video. Now since I know what my video needs work, it is just a mater of putting in the work. I need to leave enough time over the next day or two to finalize this video and finish up the editing. I know that I need more college thinking and informative data that support my argument about  the importance of time management. With a lot riding on my video grade I will be making sure my thinking is out of box and  the depth of data in my video is enough to show the audience that it is critical to manage one's time effectively. Now that I have seen what is expected and could be acceptable for a final video, it is up to me to apply myself and dedicate my time in order to making sure I produce a solid remainder of my video.

As you can see, there has been a lot of development over the past couple of months. Time is only going so slow, and the world waits for nobody at all. It is all about the motivation you have and how you want to be looked at when it is all over. People who  take pride in what they do always stand up to the plate and produce their best work when it matters the most.

Weekly Word

The first word is investment. Investment- is the investing of money or capital in order to gain profitable returns. In big businesses and on the stock market, there are many who make investments into larger companies with hopes to watch their money grow.

Especially where I'm from there is a lot of stock investment that goes in in New York City. A stock- is a supply of goods kept on hand for sale to customers by a merchant. The New York stock market is too unpredictable for me to make investments so I just put all of my money in the bank instead.

The last word of the week is exclusive. Exclusive-  is limited to the objects or objects designated. If you are trying to get exclusive sneakers in New York, your going to have to camp out on line the night before they come and you still might not get them.

Humble and Blessed

As the break winds down and the days keep passing by, it is I who must be truly thankful and appreciative of the past break. It was a lot of things that were enjoyable over these past couple of days that made me realize what life is all about. They say time passes by fast when you are having fun and time on this break was nothing short of explosive.

To be in the position that I am today is truly a God's Honest blessing. I did not think at this time last year my life would be anything like it is now. Everyday waking up and being a college athlete is not something to take for granted, we are extremely privileged and blessed to be in college and on a team at the same time. In order for one see the bigger picture they must cherish the game and have high morals for oneself. Several months into living this life, I have noticed that it takes a toll on you in every aspect and there is nothing but tough , positive thinking that can give you the power to keep pushing for the best. I have been so focused this semester that I haven't been home until our first real break, which made me realize a lot has changed.

The things I am most thankful for is to have such a great mother that cares so much about me. I have never been away from her for extended periods of time being that she was a single parent raising me. Our bond has grown over the years and with the time away from her I have learned how be more appreciate and caring of all that she does for me. Even the little things like just being in my own bedroom again and having all the HD channels on my TV is another privilege that I do not have up at college. One last thing I am extremely thankful for is being able to see my younger cousins growing up and to have the opportunity to set the right example for them look up to is just something that each generation does to set the bar higher for the family.

As you can see, there were a lot of great things to take out of the break. I had to just sit back and reflect on the moments that stuck with me and realize what life is really about. There is always something to be thankful about even when things aren't going right.

Home Sweet Home

It has finally reached that holiday season of the year. I have been at college for 4 months already without going back home to see my family or friends. It has been a rocky start to my college career and I needed to focus on my priorities as much as I can until break. Well now break has finally showed up and I still need to enjoy it and remained on track with my academics.

Having a couple of days off from school is always refreshing and much needed after a long time of working hard and handling your business. I was so excited to be back home because I have lived in New York all my life and to be in another state for most of the year is something that takes some adjustment. I never have missed my own city and house the way I did when I first got back. To relieve my self of some stress I took a ride in my car through my town and then linked up with some of cousins. We have been together all of our lives and went to the same high school so we caught up with each other and reminisced about old times. Just to be able to have some laughs with the old guys and chat it up made me realize how much I missed these type of moments.

As happy as I was to first see all my cousins and friends, I still knew that I needed to manage my time to the best of my ability out here. College is a different type of ballgame and I need to be productive every day to make sure I stay on task. The smart thing that I did was do a little bit of studying and homework each morning of afternoon before I went out and enjoyed my day. As long as you do what you have to do, you could do what you want. The most enjoyable moment of the break however would have to be Thanksgiving , seeing all of my family together bonding at the dinner table while eating some well prepared food was just something that can't be replaced. Being away for months make you realize how important times like that are.

There was a lot of good times that came from this much needed break as you can see. Although I was on break, it was still work to be done. Sometimes it has to be up to you whether or not to make that decision to be productive and not lose track of time.

Time To Focus

It has finally set in on me that my first college semester is almost over. There was a lot of things that caught me off guard at first but now I think that I have done much better. Since the season has ended a week ago, I have been able to manage my time way more efficiently. I am excited about the time off because I needed badly to focus on my classes. With finals on their way, it wasn't a better time to get finish the season and get more into the books.

Words of Wisdom

One word for this week is purpose. Purpose is the reason why something exists or why it is done. Everything in this life happens for a reason, so you can also say that everything in life has it's own purpose.

Another word that is always thrown around, is proposition. Proposition is the act of offering or suggesting that something be considered , accepted, adopted, or done. The people who have the most power are the ones who are constantly trying to make propositions for the benefit of our economy.

Last but not least, the last weekly word is dynamic. Dynamic is pertaining to or characterized by energy or effective action. In high school I was always in the paper each weekend because of my dynamic playmaking skills that help carry my team to victory week in and week out.

Creative Mindset

For my final video draft, I will go all out in order to achieve the best grade that is possible. It is not easy to go all out and do the maximum workload necessary. In order to be the best however, work similar to that is inevitable. It is not an easy task to think out the ballpark and display those ideas in a way that makes sense to everyone.

In order to succeed in this class and on that video, I will be going the hardest that I can mentally and physically. Although we have a couple of weeks to get our assignments finished up, it is important to get some work done daily in order to keep you a good pace. Being creative is something that is much needed in order to have entertaining work. You must be able to make others relate to you and speak with your style. If you are the one telling a story or producing the video, the attention is going to be on you. The more dynamic ways you can think of to relay information  into the audience , the better it is for your video and the grade you will receive on it.

I will definitely not procrastinate on this video. It is worth a good portion of our grades, and could be the difference maker between a lower and higher grade. The more time you give yourself , the more comfortable you will be with your product because you didn't have to rush or just throw something together. The main way you can be creative is just by finding different ways throughout the video to make important, critical points. If you can effectively relay information and a message through your work, then it shows how advanced of a video you have produced. Another way to display some creativity is by staying true to your character and by making personal connections. Any way that you can simplify what you are trying to say for your audience is a plus and shows good ability on your part.

As you can see, you can't just be creative it takes a lot of thought and brainstorming. It isn't going to be possible to be creative if you are waiting time and waiting until the last minute to do all of your work. Being creative comes from being comfortable and being unique. Once you start to use your own individual ideas and skills you will start creating and developing a lot of interesting work.

Collegiate Mastermind

As I have learned by being in college, there is a transition with the level of work that is expected out of us students. We are supposed to apply ourselves to the max of our ability in order to get the most we can from this college experience. Not only are we learning at a fast rate and being assigned tough work but we are setting up our future career possibilities and building a foundation for ourselves. It is important to show you the outstanding work we are capable of in order to excel at everything we do in this competitive life we have set out for us.

In my video, I will be as open-minded as I can possibly be. There are many good ideas I have about time management that are helpful to many students older and younger then me. In my video I will make sure to include my viewpoint and way of thinking into perspective . It is always good when a lot of people can relate to the type of lifestyle you live and/or your traits so you can get them to see things from your perspective. This is what shows the collegiate thinking process because not everyone is skilled at being innovative and analyzing the noticeable. The way you get the audience entertained is by getting them to understand you on a psychological level and keeping them intrigued by what you are trying to tell them.

It is not about how much you write or record but it's the quality that matters. The best way to make sure something has good quality is by taking your time and making constant edits until it is perfected. I will be making a thorough video that is not only telling people about time management tips but also an entertaining piece that has knowledge that you can take and apply to your daily life. I can go on for days about how to maintain good time management skills but it is the way I present it that will be judged and critiqued. If I present it in a way that shows structure and effort, people will definitely see the elite thinking it took in order to create such a masterpiece. I will use different approaches with the audience throughout my video and change topics throughout the video to be diverse and recognizable to everyone.

Lastly, there is no shortcut in life. You get what you put in and that's why you can never be mad at anyone but yourself at the end of the day. There is no substitute for hard work, you just have to be gritty and grind it out. I am starting my video now so I can take my time and slowly but surely develop a masterpiece that positively impacts my grade.

Weekly Words

The word of the week is Discipline. Discipline is punishment in the way of punishment or correcting. Many people who are disciplined for their mistakes have came back from that and showed signs of growth. Not a lot of people respond well to being disciplined, it takes a humble person to take a positive from a negative.

Perspective is a point of view, or the way someone looks at a particular topic. In the house of representatives, there are many different perspectives of the United States. There are different political parties that fight amongst each other to produce ideas that are what they feel are the best for our country moving forward.

An Indisciplinary Perspective - is a viewpoint from one who doesn't care about punishment or being critiqued. They are the way they are type of people have an indisiciplinary perspective.

Critical Thinking Questions

In the world we live, there are many different routes one can take. It is not about where you start, it's where you finish. There are many short cuts in life and a lot of distractions that may take one of it's route. It is up to you in order to do what you need to in order to reach you goals and get the most you can out of your life.

As I was reading about the article with the college evaluations I was startled. I felt a little comforted that I wasn't the only one off to a rather rocky start but however, unlike many people according to their studies, I am determined to succeed in whatever I do. I am not content with being an " average Joe ," I have always prided myself by being one of the top candidates in everything that I do. As I realized in college, there is a lot of hard work that needs to put in just for a good grade. For a person who wants to be the best of the best, that means that I must work a couple times harder in order to still meet my tough expectations. A decision I had to make after I asked myself a huge question. After I dug myself into a little whole this school work I had to wake up and do all of my work. I then asked myself if I really put the time and effort and work the hardest I can now, will I really have to do less work once I graduate and get into my career?

I did a lot of thinking a have to agree with my mother. She always told me that as a young teenager, I would have to start getting used to working hard now so I could relax later in life but still be at a young age. That also motivates me to be the best at everything I do because I feel like it's not always the most talented people but the hardest workers that shine in the long run. You need to dedicate you life to your family one day, and when that happens you want to be in a good position with a job that pays you well enough to provide nice things for your loved ones. All of the hours we put in with work and class is going to teach us a lot about our desired field and getting good grades will make you stand out from the others. People want to hire hard working reliable and smart employees who have potential with making the company more successful then they already are. If you work hard now, it will definitely pay off when you run your own business or get that big promotion.

In life, nothing is just given to you. You must earn what is worth having and keeping. As you probably heard, "easy come, easy go," this is a saying that supports my idea of working hard will get you what you want. If you work hard and excel in what you do now, the chances are you will comfortable and relaxed when you have you career.

Realist Values

In the college level of school, nothing really comes easy. You must work hard for what you want to achieve whether it's in the classroom or on the field. I can not downgrade any particular field's value because it isn't my field of choice or something I am talented with. As you learn throughout life, everybody has their own set of skills and talents that make one standout from another. With that being said, I suggest that value of a liberal arts education is pretty high and not easy to come by at all.

I think the liberal arts education is a very valued one. It is a very dynamic verification that can get you to a lot of places. By comprising the arts, you can become a very diverse individual with some interesting people that you will meet and learn from on the way. The way liberal arts is looked at in the state's isn't as highly as it is over in Europe or Asia, unfortunately. I think there is a lot more going on in America that sometimes outshines the Liberal Arts community. That doesn't take the value however, because anything that is a career and provides you with a job is a highly valued job that can contribute to a comfortable way of living life.

The arts is such a wide field of study that qualifies you for a lot of different position that you may be eligible for if you have your liberal arts degree. I think that if you are a talented model/actress and you have been doing it all of your life, why wouldn't you pursue a dream that can take you across the world and open you up to so many different viewpoints? There are not a lot of famous award winning actresses and actors for a reason. As you will learn in life, there is a non-stop cycle of work that needs to be done in order to keep improving in your field. In this life, we have to work regardless to get what we need and want. If you love what you are doing, no matter what it is I'm sure you will find a way to commit to it and do whatever you have to in order to be the best you can be. A liberal arts education, is something that is internationally becoming more popular. Something like that would be an attraction to me if I was good in the arts. I feel like expanding your network is what life is all about; the more you can travel the world, express your ideas , or gain knowledge with others who are into the same things as you is what makes you a complete and versatile individual.

As you can see, there is a field of choice for everyone. The career you choose is a big choice that can effect the way you live your life and are looked at in society. The liberal arts is a very underrated one that is a very high valued and tough career to pursue. The real elite artists who have mastered their field and have won awards are worthy of high praise and have the best rewards for their master pieces.

Class Registration

It is almost that time of the year that we go on break. It happened that fast! I feel like I just got to college a month ago and I'm already in the middle of November becoming a much more efficient student athlete. Because I am a student athlete I must keep open strictly for football. My coach gave us our PIN so we could start  registering this week for classes. I am not too happy with the classes I have to take but it is require and I can probably learn and develop a lot more useful skills and techniques that I could use far into the future. For example, now I will have the opportunity to learn how to speak Spanish which is something I never took serious until I realized I can really use it to help me a job.

Vocab

Innovation is the word of the week. Innovation is a new device, idea , or method. It can also be looked at as an introduction to new beginnings. This is a good comparison to college and the way we have to adapt to a new life with new challenges. We learn a lot of things about ourselves during the process.

Another word I have learnt this week is submissive. A submissive person is somebody who gives in, and feels inclined to submit. Non resistant.

Last word of the week is tractable. Tractable is when you are easily managed or controlled. It is almost the same as submissive.

Question Evaluations

I definitely thought that these readings had a lot of useful information to give out. I had certain thoughts and questions based on what I have learned from being at college now. You have to use thought and choice into making good critical thinking questions. I definitely tried to write something as close to a collegiate question I could make up.

These questions were not as simply as previous assignments and took some time to get the hang of. I definitely think I could use some work with this skill. However, I do feel like I was helped out by my peers when reading their questions. I thought Jana had some good points. She used the question about the hard worker or creative person. I also like how she linked innovation to technology. By reading her blogs and a few other students' made me realize I still have a long way to go  in order to be at the top of my game. In order to be good at college you must think and be able to have these type of skills to do well in life.

This isn't high school anymore and I will be seeing new ideas. I have to keep adjusting and developing the skills that I can learn and use in the future. Even from the title of Jana, " A New Level Of Thinking ", taught me that I need to step my game up and master that level.

Critical Thinking Questions

In the readings for this past week, there were some quality points being proved and addressed. The " Joy of Boredom " and the "32 innovations " had a lot of  useful details that made  me sit down and try to sink all in. As I do that process and re-track to myself, I tend to question things and second guess anything that I feel sounds too good to be true. It is a sign of a true thinker who knows how to comprehend knowledge.

Questions 1-3
When reading through the 32 innovations I found a lot of interesting points and facts that made me do some thinking. In all of honesty, do you think a creative mind is more useful then the hardest working soul? How much better can these movies keep looking? Can it keep producing more frames at a faster rate on the screen?  I know some people who drink the old plain coffee, so with all these innovations and upgrades will the coffee demand drop?
Question 4
A question that I've gave a lot of thought to after reading the " Joy of Boredom " reading is how much fun was being bored back when technology wasn't around as much would be? It is never really given thought because we have all these nice flat screen TV's and ipads that keep us distracted and entertained even when we are bored and have nothing to do. It can sometimes even be a downfall to all of the procrastination that one does. As hard as that is to believe, as far as a few decades ago there were no forms of cellular devices or flat screen televisions. Most people used the radio to get through the day and then watch television when  it had something good on. That is why people used to be more active and exercise more. Children even used to be more active in the community or neighborhood athletics activities and  be in better shape back then also. The modern day society has become far more lazy and complacent.I honestly think it would be far worse to be bored back then however. Although it was easier to stay in shape and be active in the community, you were really bored and with nothing to do if your friends were not around or once it got to a late time of the day. There were more strict parents and less activities/distractions to get into that would leave you doing the usual two things, watching the family TV or listening to your radio.

Vocabulary

Creativity is the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, etc. Being able to think out of the box and be original is the best thing about being creative. It truly shows how much you can stretch your imagination effectively. Most creative people are successful for the simple fact that they can utilize their creative ability and gain profit.

People who are very creative usually have a wide imagination. Imagination is the faculty of producing ideal creations consistent with reality. Some people with good imaginations go on to be famous architects and authors of great novels.

One type of person who is creative is definitely Outgoing. Outgoing is when you are interested and responsive to others. The more creative you are, the more outgoing of a personality you have. Especially if you are the type of person to elaborate of your imagination and creations.

A Step In My Shoes

There is a lot of dreaming that we do on a daily basis. From the moment we are born, even as infants we dream and have visions that sometimes come back to us years later. Of course you cannot remember your first couple of years as an infant but there was always a brain working its own ways in our small undeveloped brains from day 1. I think the most creative idea I've ever had is realizing that I should play sports. I was around 4-5 years old when I had an image of me being the best shortstop in my town. I just started going to school the same year and seeing all the posters of professional athletes hanging up in our classroom made me think I can be an athlete. Just like that I started playing baseball.

One big reason I played baseball is because I wanted to be just like Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees. All I hung out with were baseball players or some type of athletes that liked winning and being the best at what they did. The first year I played baseball I learned a lot about myself. Not to mention I had to change my handedness on the field from my left to right hand to I could be a shortstop. After I adjusted to that, me and my team had an impressive season. I never thought I would be that talented at baseball, I really thought I was going to stick with this sport forever. However, after 7 consecutive years of dedicating myself to baseball, I got tired with the sport and decided to see if had any more talents with athletics. Baseball gave me the confidence and the thought that I can do whatever I put my mind to.

The same year I quit playing baseball, I had another bright idea which happened to be playing football. At this point in my life I was roughly 12 years old and I did not ever play a down of football ever before. I just knew that I was a big body and athletically inclined to be a football player. After a year of playing the sport, winning the city championship , and making nationals I fell in love with the sport. I had to be thankful for baseball though for giving me a start with sports and keeping me out of trouble as much it could. However, when I got to high school everything changed. It wasn't pop warner anymore, I was a high school football player well known throughout the school. My freshman year was definitely the most enjoyable year because even though I didn't participate in the game watching my HS win the city championship against our rivals made me work even more harder for when it became my time. The student athletes that went to college from my HS, I admired all of them as they all had a drive and passion in them that made them champions.

As I look back on my HS football career I think I we definitely could have won a championship post the 2009 era. I should have been more of a leader off the field even as an underclassmen. A lot of people looked up to me because I had good grades and made plays every week on the field. I always thought I was a good leader until I learned that you need to be a leader at all times and not only on the field. As much talent as we had on our team we weren't making the best decisions and sometimes that would put our team or coach in a bad predicament. However, I think everything happens for a reason and although me and my class never won a championship together it just motivates me to become a better leader and football player. You live and you learn. Now as my freshman year season campaign is reaching its end I will be back to training and get back to being the scholar athlete that I am. I have big dreams to be successful either as an NFL wide receiver or an accountant and I will not fall short of my goals because I came too far to throw it all away now. Like I learned from baseball when I was a toddler, I can do ANYTHING I put my mind to.

Midterm Video Evaluation

Since I have embraced on this college journey a couple of months, I have been surprised with the work load and type of work that is assigned sometimes. Initially, when we were assigned to a video project I was in shock because I have never been asked to produce anything like that in my 13 year academic career thus far. It was something that I would eventually take on and attempt however. For my first advertising video I think I did fairly well.

My teacher all assigned us different tasks that our videos had to be about. I don't think anybody had the same topic. For my video I was asked to create a video describes and shows how the SCSU football team makes Southern a better place. Since it was my first video ever, I didn't meet all the requirements, however you were definitely able to see my effort in the video. I did not include a title, but as for interviewing people, I had interviewed one of my teammates and had other people in my video to give a feel of what it is really like at Southern. I even let the camera behind the scenes into our team locker room.

Unfortunately, because I procrastinated so much I had to use my phone and link the videos together on my former YouTube recruiting account. If I had more time I would of asked my mother to bring her camcorder out here that she used to use to record my high school football games. Despite the lack of technology I was working with, I think you were able to hear my voice clearly throughout the video. I definitely think I had kept interest of the audience  because I presented with my own style and tried to keep it as informative as I can with giving it a casual feel. Although my video had the minimum of 5 minutes I think I was able to show how the SCSU football team adds to the school spirit and gives Southern more to cheer about.

If I was grading my video, I would take into account that many college students who are making the transition to college were never assigned a video as a midterm assignment. Although I did not meet all requirements I put some solid hard work into getting at least a B-. There were definitely some more details I could of included  in the video and not having the title page probably will hurt me somewhat therefore my expectations aren't unrealistically high. Next  time I won't wait until the final days to do something I have never done before and I will get a higher grade.

The Assembly

Unfortunately I was not able  to see Ms. Sotomayor speak at Southern on Monday. However when reading the book and seeing some recorded clips from Monday I got a sense of the type of women she is. A very respectable woman who fought an uphill battle and came a long way from her younger days. Although she struggled early in her life, she preserved through poverty and diabetes. She has been through a lot to become a member of the supreme court. One thing I respect about her is her love and respect for her mother regardless of her childhood struggles she still shows love and appreciation for the lady who created her. She stayed positive and believed in herself through all of the ups and down. Anything is possible when you believe in yourself and have a strong-willed heart.

Reality Check

As the weeks pile up, here we are already passed the midterm mark in the semester. I was in awe when I found out that there were midterm grades already, I did not expect it to come in that fast. I realized quickly that you must stay on  top of your workload from the beginning and not fall behind. That's why you must manage your time wisely and use good judgment with your decision making.

I would say I am in the lower to middle range of where I intended to be at. I only have but so much time left to change that, so it was important of me to make an epic change in the way I did things on a daily basis. First of all, it is important to develop time management skills and apply them to your homework and studying time. It is critical to put time into getting the work done. Not only do you have to spend large amounts of time into homework, but also for studying. Especially when studying for midterms and  finals that effect your grade tremendously, it may require hours of review for you to feel confident for your exams.

I was glad that I was doing good in my economics and media class. I'm glad to see my hard work is reflecting in some of my classes and just motivation to keep getting them all up. I have faith that will time and repetition I will master the preparation tactics I need in order to have good grades in all of my classes. It will not be easy but nothing worth having comes easy. It's all about pushing yourself to be the best you can be at everything you do. Nothing is more important then your image and how you are remembered. I have to apply myself on and off the field because I also understand that I will not being playing football forever and life will still be here staring me in the face. In order to have a good job in a respectable field you must have good grades to show and that's why I will not be satisfied until I meet my high goals.

Vocabulary of the Week

Critical thinking is discipline thinking that is open minded, rational, and informed by evidence. There is a lot of different things that involve critical thinking and making the best decision possible. The decisions you make at any point in your life can effect you for a lifetime depending on how serious of a situation you find yourself in. That's why it is always good evaluate your situation and surroundings and make sure you are doing what's best for you in the long run.

When you are analyzing something, you must be extra careful. To analyze is when you examine critically in detail in order to identify key causes, factors , and possible results. If you are a good analyzer you will notice a lot about your surroundings and how to always keep yourself in a good position with your life. It is always the  people who don't pay attention and care about what they do that get hit with the drama when they least expect it. It is always better to be safe then sorry, stay aware.

One thing that can't be taught is good improvising skills. To improvise, is to perform, deliver , or compose without preparation. Sometimes life catches you off guard and then it is up to you to roll with punches the right way and keep your composure. You must use old experiences for help on dealing with what is thrown at you, the way you handle it can sometimes benefit you and teach lessons for the future.

Thinking Critically

To me, critical thinking is important because of the fact that it is a lethal skill that can make or break you at times. The more mature and organized you are, the easier it should be to make tough decisions based off of instincts and prior experiences. Critical thinking is being able to form reasoned conclusions based on a process of reasoning and common sense. Over the past couple weeks I have definitely learned a lot about the critical thinking process and how beneficial it truly is.
The first step to thinking critically is analyzing the situation you are. If you are not where you need to be or feel like you are continuously under achieving your goals, you should reevaluate your priorities and habits that are taking away from your success. Honestly, you must always think about the consequences of what your actions can lead to and make the right decision based on your feelings toward that. The more caution and responsibility you take on with your life, the more you will automatically critically think because you want the best outcomes for your life. If your life is worth living, you must make sure you care about being the best person you could be and making good decisions that will eventually lead on a path to success.

For the brief time that I have been at college, I have realized that critical thinking is a necessity out here. here is a lot of responsibility that comes with being a student athlete and while being on a semi-large campus there can be some distractions that can steer me off course. It is important that you stay focused and on top of priorities before you do anything else with your time. Time management is another area of critical thinking that can be a big help with doing your work and managing your time to the  best of your ability. There is a famous quote saying " If you don't have a plan then your plan must be to fail." This basically means that if you haven't thought about goals and plans to succeed life that you're basically on a way toward failure since you have no direction or guidance. Critical thinking can take you far in life as long as you listen to what your conscience and reasoned experience tell you to do.

Critical thinking is a skill that you are not born with. You must develop this skill over time with maturity and learning from prior experiences. As long as you think before you act and use your best judgment tactics you will probably see a lot of success and  good effects thanks to your smart decisions.

Work hard now, have fun later. This is an important quote that always keeps me sane and thinking right. My priorities are first and foremost before anything. If you just want to have fun all the time and never do anything productive you need to seriously reevaluate the direction your life is headed and try to do something about it if its not too late.

For a busy person like myself, it may be harder to keep following my guidelines and want to balance my work and play out more evenly, but I know that I can't. Being a student athlete is a very demanding lifestyle you must be ready to commit to. That's why there aren't a lot of us because not everyone is mentally strong enough to handle the work load of college classes and work. If you could put yourself in my shoes for one day you would understand why people like Sonia and I feel blessed to be in the position we are in to this day. It is easy to become nothing in life but it is hard to be somebody worth remembering.

Coming from the suburbs and seeing how hard times are for some of the people we grew up with, me and Sonia both chose another road that would take us away from the regular. To be blessed with an opportunity to be a wide receiver for a good school like southern is truly honoring and I am challenging myself to be the best player I can be off and on the field. It is important to keep chasing your dreams and working on your craft and priorities rather then always relaxing  or " just chilling." The harder you work now, the more fun you can have later on in life when your paid and retired from your long positive working career.

Pep Rally

Last Friday, was a day before my first ever college homecoming game. I did not know that before every homecoming game that there is a pep rally for the football and all other sports teams at that. When my coach told us we had a pep rally after class, I truly didn't know what to expect.

When I first heard that the pep rally was in the Fieldhouse I didn't even want to go. I knew it was mandatory so I had to go regardless. Once I put my jersey on and seen how crowded the gym was, my mind was changed instantly. It was a nice excited crowd in the stand and it was a nice way to officially kick off the athletic program for the 2013-2014 season. I was impressed by the step dancers in their performance and I also liked how the gymnastics team entered the court when it was their time. Next year I
will be looking forward to the homecoming pep rally way more then I was this year.

Mastery in today's world that is not an easy quick thing to achieve. Honestly you cannot be a master of something unless you have comprehensive knowledge or skill in a subject or accomplishment. In today's society that is a high standard to live up to since the normal middle class society has gotten poorer due to our economy's struggles.

Honestly, it is a challenge that you must embrace in order to seek success in life. If you can't master a skill or information how do you expect to be a master? It takes time and hard work to get to the top. The more you keep working on your craft, the easier it will be over time and eventually become almost like a second nature.

Mastery

As I  looked down the page of all the student blogs, they all looked like everyone put good effort into them. There were definitely a few blogs that stood out to me and caught my attention more then others. By now, the first quarter of our freshmen career is over, and we are soaking up information and applying it right along to the logic of our daily lives. "So far so good " is an understatement for the quality of work that I feel we are all producing as a whole.

One person's blogs who I felt really was worthy of an A+ or A was Samantha S. Not only did she use critical thinking but her interesting title "My Style " made me click her blog see how it was instantly. I was not disappointed with her quality of work she put into her layout, along with her detail in her writing. All her blogs had a consistent mix-up of critical points, pictures, and graphics of text that was motivational and went right along with each week's assignments. Her post's are definitely one of the most elite blogs I've seen in our class thus far.

Another person who I feel deserves an A on the blogs and is mastering these assignments is Caitlyn Mcavoy. I can tell that she put a lot of effort and time into her work. I like how she has an all white layout, it makes everything just look more graceful and original. I found myself agreeing with what she was talking about in some of her posts like the Math being a struggle. Overall it was clear to understand where Caitlyn was coming from and her information included with her arguments were impressive.

I could go on for days about the quality of work that is on that homepage. However, it is only so much I could say on these blogs but the point is the more challenges we have been getting the more we must answer back positively and keep adapting quick. I feel like we are definitely taking big strides forwards as a whole and its showing through the quality of work in our blogs.

Blog B

Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about the tendencies of the human mindset and motivation. Who knew that there would be different types of motivation and mindsets that could hold you back from maximizing your potential? I didn't think that there such thing as a “fixed mindset " that pretty much is content with the being that they are and they lack that extra drive that people with a growth mindset have.  There aren't that many options. Either your one or another and luckily, I am able to realize and rely on my growth mindset to push me to my limits and give me extra determination.

Another topic that was interesting was discovering out that not only were there different types of mindsets but that there are also different types of motivations. However, I believe that I am an intrinsic motivation type of person. If I don’t have it in me to do something there is no way I am going to be bribed or convinced into doing it. This means that I don’t need any rewards for what of is expected of me. My conscience, mind, and body push and give me the drive I need when I am lacking or fatigued by the uphill challenges. You can’t always expect rewards for something that you are expected to do. Once you get used to handling your priorities and striving for the top on the regular basis it will become a second nature to have intrinsic motivation.

Alike the previous topic, I think the gritty personality fits in perfectly, it is an extension of how intrinsic motivation tells you keep persevering and staying strong. Grit is a non-cognitive trait that is felt when you have a passion from your heart to keep doing your best. This is a similarity to the growth mindset and intrinsic motivation. The self-determination and mental toughness to stay strong and be able to adapt at a high level to all that is thrown to one throughout life is respectable. That’s why it is called “gritty” when you grind it out and put your hardest effort into a long hard game of college football or whether you grind it out in school and work hard now and let everything pay off later. I am a big believer of working hard and proving myself to fullest.
In today’s society, there is a lot of struggles that one another go through on a daily basis. There has been plenty of adversity I have gone through so far in my life. With a new setting and lifestyle, there will be some new challenges. I don’t think I have been faced with anything harder than this adjustment to college as a whole. Not only am I not used to being just a wide receiver on the team instead of the star receiver, but handling the workload of advanced college classes in my first semester isn’t the easiest thing to do.

Since I have gotten to college, I must admit that it was more then what I expected. I did not expect to come to football
l camp and not be the superstar receiver that I am. However, reality kicked in fast as I did not see myself get into a game until last weekend. I knew that college football was faster and needed more dedication than high school but I did not expect to be a 2
nd string receiver, even as freshmen. Even though I am behind an upperclassman, I feel like if anything I should be seeing more reps in the games and get the opportunity and experience I need to show and evolve into the great player that I can be. As hard as it was at first to except that I’m not a starter, it also was a humbling experience. It made me reevaluate my work ethic and motivation. I believe that I am progressing everyday and that I am outworking myself more and more each day.

To add on to my pile of adjustments and dedication, college work is definitely a big reality check. I never listened to my old teachers and parents when they said college work requires a lot of will and time. At first I thought that it wouldn’t be a big change and that I could just get the success I use to get back in the past without putting in that much work. They were all correct about the effort needed in order to do this work on a daily basis. I can honestly say it has taught me how to manage my time more wisely. I have to do everything to my best ability and take life for the serious unpredictable journey it is. With an organized routine and pattern that can effectively get work done is something that is needed in order to stay on the top of my academic goals.
